Crayman Harvey Inspires Criminal Justice Reform on the Beyond the Bars Podcast

Columbia – In the latest episode of the Beyond the Bars podcast, host & Director of Behavioral Health at Freedom Behavioral Health, Inc., Josh Young, talks with the Director of the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, Crayman Harvey. They discuss Director Harvey’s journey from a tough childhood to a leadership role in the criminal justice system. This important conversation covers how problems like substance abuse and mental health affect incarceration and why it is important to change how we deal with these issues.

The National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics (NCDAS) reports that each year, 244,000 Americans go to prison for drug-related crimes, and around 80% of inmates struggle with drug or alcohol abuse.

At the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, Director Harvey is putting in place new strategies to support mentally ill individuals, including special housing units and more mental health staff.

“Director Harvey has stepped up to ensure that the patients at Alvin S. Glenn are receiving fair treatment and have access to medical and mental health care,” says Josh Young. “Director Harvey does not want to provide the minimum, but instead lead the country by creating a top-of-the-line mental health and medical program at his jail.  We are proud to partner with Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center to take steps towards making this vision a reality.”

During the podcast, Harvey shares his own story and talks about his work in the military, law enforcement, and juvenile justice. He believes we should focus more on helping people rather than just punishing them. He calls for creating mental health facilities and substance abuse centers instead of building more jails.

Recently, Director Harvey earned the Certified Correctional Health Professional (CCHP) title from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, recognizing him as a leader in correctional healthcare. This positions Richland County, SC as one of the leaders in changing how we approach these issues across the country.
